Creating a sense of community Essay Introduction Organizations, leaders and employees often need to be commended on a job well done and celebrate it with some exceptional time off from work. This is a positive step for the organization because it not only shows appreciation for those individuals who come to work every day to make sure that their organization achieve all of its goals, but illustrates the organizations appreciation for it valuable staff and employees. This can be done by simply honoring most federal and calendar year holidays throughout the year, company holidays including time off for birthdays and banquet celebrations as well. In addition, on a dismal note, sometimes an organization may have to honor its employees and staff for tragic circumstances that may occur throughout the year. Celebrating the community is key for an organization in terms of keeping their employees motivated and excited about giving their best effort on each task at hand. Kouzes Posner mentions that celebrations serve as important a purpose in the long-term of an organization as does the daily performance of tasks ( Kouzes Posner, p.310, 2013). Celebrating the community serves as a medicine that brings an organizations and its employees together in each prospective shared values and commitments. Overview of community building practices Kouzes Posner states that In acknowledging the community (Ã¢â¬ common unityÃ¢â¬ ) that individuals share with each other, a sense of team spirit is created among leaders who build and maintain the social support that is required for individuals to thrive and excel during tough times ( Kouzes Ã Posner, p.310, 2013). Organizations must have in place an supportive structure that will support the employees and enhance their opportunities for appreciation for their hard work. Communities that have a strong commitment for connecting celebrations, community and commitment will set themselves far above average organizations. An outstanding leader who has made the vow to help renew those employeesÃ¢â¬â¢ commitments will be headed in a positive direction. This approach will serve as a motivational and retention tool for the leaders and organization. Organizations should commit themselves on building fun activities and socials that are fitted for those employees, itÃ¢â¬â¢s a celebration of appreciation and respect. Celebrating those outstanding deeds that each employee exemplified should not be kept in house. The good news should be shared with the community, the public. Kouzes Posner suggest that private rewards do little to set an example for the organization ( Kouzes Posner, p.313, 2013). However, having the opportunity to share someoneÃ¢â¬â¢s story of success is worth celebrating and it will also highlight the individual and the organization in a positive manner. Organizations that connect celebration, community and commitment for the long haul will undoubtedly be successful. Organizations that ensure that their employees understand that they are part of the big picture know that shared values, destiny and victories are important to securing a sense of community. Leaders should make sure that all employees have the opportunity to play a functional role in the celebrations and the framework that support the organizations values. Celebrations can come in all forms such as cyclical celebrations, celebrations of triumph, personal transitions, workplace altruism, events and ritual for comfort and letting go. Not every celebration is upbeat and enjoyable. There are times when a employee may have a sick family member or even suffered a loss of a loved one. Author Colleen Young mentioneds that in ttodayÃ¢â¬â¢s organization, the fledgling, but active, community continues to grow, providing peer-to-peer support and information for a very specific point in the health continuum, namely for people living with life-threatening disease, for friends and family who care about and for them, and for people dealing with grief and loss (Young, C. 2013). Different cultures There are many different cultures all around the world that handleÃ their employees differently. Individuals take time to celebrate their prospective cultures that have a particular meaning for them. Leaders that do not implement group interactions or celebrations could lack the reinforcement of a common purpose for different cultures. The organization have to get involved in each culture collaboration. The cultures in communities are many, such as the Chinese community which is the largest and the fastest growing group among Asian and Pacific Islander populations. It also has many different dialects that a leader and organization must understand. Furthermore, thereÃ¢â¬â¢s the African American Community and the Central American Community. The African American Community has a group history of oppression and survival also affects the way it is organized. The networks and organizations that form to protect the rights of their members influence the way in which members of the group organize for self-help. It is important for an organization to know about their history and celebrated it accordingly. Lastly, there is the Central Americans who fled from poverty and oppression in their countries to seek a more secure and better life in a new place here in the United States. Challenges that leaders face in respecting the cultural differences Some of the challenges that a leader may encounter are not knowing the unknown and how to deal with tension among the groups when resources are limited. Another challenging situation that will likely to confront the leader is struggling with immigrants whose culture, institution and tradition are not readily familiar to most mainstream groups. Some of those cultures may not have community groups with leaders. Therefore, there is no organization or guidance. Culture typically refers to a set of symbols, rituals, values, and beliefs that make one group different from another. Culture is learned and shared with people who live or lived in the same social environment for a long time. Provide best practices for overcoming these challenges There are several best practices that can help the leader to overcome those cultural challenges. Kouzes Posner discusses that Reflection and Action can help when social interactions required to uphold individuals or groups to a high standard. People are asked to go beyond their comfort zone, so as a leader you should set the example by getting personally involved in the celebrations of varies cultures ( Kouzes Posner, p.329, 2013). Some otherÃ best practices may include Plan a celebration today, reinforce core values in your celebrations. A leader need to start the celebration right now and donÃ¢â¬â¢t procrastinate. Understanding those cultures now will make for a better transition of understanding. Lastly, a leader should understand the cultures values and what they aspire to realize ( Kouzes Posner, p.331, 2013). Being innovative and obtaining values and loyalty are key factors that will enable a leader to be successful in dealing with multiple cultures. SDLP I will implement my understanding of connecting celebration, community and commitment to my professional career. I have a clearer picture of how to bond and recognize those employees who work hard and treat them like an individual should be treated. I will go a step further in implementing a framework that will celebrate the key values of my staff when they go the extra mile to achieve their goals. My commitment to them will highlight and reward them not just internally, but publically as well. I know that this will be a motivation tool that can help shape the future of me as a leader and my organization. I will document my newly found knowledge of celebrating a community in my SDLP.

Creon -Ã The Tragic Hero in Antigone There is still a great debate on who is, in fact, the tragic hero in SophoclesÃ¢â¬â¢ Antigone. Many hold that it must be Antigone, herself; after all, the play does bear her name. But in actuality, Creon, not Antigone, is the tragic hero. In order to determine whether or not Creon is the tragic hero, one will first have to answer the question, Ã¢â¬Å"What is a tragic hero?Ã¢â¬ Aristotle, when discussing the nature of such a hero in his theory of drama, states that such a hero is neither purely innocent nor purely evil. This person is usually born high in the ranks of society and must also possess a tragic flaw, which originates from within and usually manifests itself through poor judgment and/or extreme arrogance. The tragic flaw also dooms the character to a ruinous end. Creon, as king of Thebes, is at the top of the social ladder. He thus already meets one of AristotleÃ¢â¬â¢s chief criteria. Yet, not only is he king, he is also human and possesses frailties which qualify him to make serious mistakes and he possesses talents which allow him also to excel. Hence, Creon is neither overly good nor bad. It is also written that the tragic heroÃ¢â¬â¢s actions may determine the fates of one or more characters within the tragedy. Appropriately, CreonÃ¢â¬â¢s station as king place shim in a position of great power, influence and responsibility. The extent of this power was quite evident when he sentenced Antigone to death for disobeying his proclamation. Now we come to what, if anything, is the single most important component of being a tragic hero. Here we have the tragic flaw. CreonÃ¢â¬â¢s tragic flaw was his hubris or his pride and arrogance in the face of divine powers. His downfall began when he denied the basic divine right of burial to Polyneices and was cemented when he condemned Antigone for her opposition to his law. When one closely examines AntigoneÃ¢â¬â¢s reasons for burying her brother, it becomes clear that she was simply demonstrating her love, honor, and loyalty to her family. Have you ever deployed your best team to resolve a problem and have the team execute flawlessly, only to find that the problem that was solved did not address the customerÃ¢â¬â¢s real need? This common scenario is often the source of widespread customer dissatisfaction and is all too prevalent in todayÃ¢â¬â¢s nonprofit business environment where valuable resources are needlessly and inadvertently wasted because problems are not accurately identified. Given the fast pace of change in todayÃ¢â¬â¢s market and the high volume of information that inundate leaders on a daily basis, it is essential to have an approach for identifying key organizational issues. Problems often arise at the senior leadership level and those leaders need to suppress their natural inclination to immediately solve the problem. The tendency to react (Ready, fire, aim) often leads to less creative solutions that may not meet the real need. It is critical that a structured, deliberate approach be taken to solve complex problems in order to arrive at a solution that will allow effective collaboration among all the key knowledge experts, so that they can generate useful ideas and achieve the desired result. A Structured Approach to Problem Solving: Creative Problem Solving BuffaloÃ¢â ¢ Accurately framing the problem is the most important step of the Creative Problem Solving Ã¢â¬âBuffalo (Ã¢â¬Å"CPSBÃ¢â¬ ) process. It is imperative to understand the problem and what makes the CPSB process effective is that it provides a structure, language, and tools for targeting opportunities. The problem identification framework under the CPSB model begins with the Ã¢â¬ËTask Appraisal Process. The Task Appraisal Process has four elements: * People Ã¢â¬â Are the right people working on the tasks; do they have the authority and responsibility to take action; what level of sponsorship is being provided; do the people have the necessary knowledge and skill to address the problem? * Outcomes Ã¢â¬â Is there a clear understanding of the desired outcome; is a current process being improved or are a new process being created; what are the most and least important aspects of the problem; how is the outcome that is desired different from what exits currently? Context Ã¢â¬â What has been tried before to address this issue; does it link to the strategic priorities; are there the necessary resources (time, money, people, etc)? * Method Ã¢â¬â How familiar are the people with the problem solving tools/methods that will be used? The Task Appraisal Process can be applied in a wide range of scenarios. Here are a few examples: * Interviewing clients to evaluate and determine which problems to address and more effectively position services. Leading a group of cross functional leaders to develop a consensus on the important issue to solve and streamline the engagement. * Improving or repairing relationships with a previous client or organization. Identifying the Problem and example To lead customers in the problem solving process, it is important to determine the customerÃ¢â¬â¢s level of understanding of their problem. The selection of appropriate tools and techniques to facilitate the process will depend on the specificity of the issue. Are they broad challenges or opportunities? (e. g. Ã¢â¬Å"My grant process takes too long. Ã¢â¬ ) * Do they need to close the gap between current and future state? (e. g. Ã¢â¬Å"How can we better understand the grant approval process? Ã¢â¬ ) * Do they understand their current state? (e. g. Ã¢â¬Å"Can we articulate the current cycle time, how much does it cost today? Do we have the data to support our current assumptions? Ã¢â¬Å") Tools and Techniques Structuring and framing the issues at the front end of the process is critical to successfully implementing the process. This approach provides users with a variety of tools ranging from idea generation to action planning and these tools used in conjunction with the process guidelines allow the user to achieve the desired result. The power is in the execution and the tools for executing the process are categorized into three areas: * Generating ideas Ã¢â¬â Incremental change or step change will determine the appropriate and most productive use of the nine available tools. * Focusing Ã¢â¬â There are eight tools that can compress a large quantity of options or others that are suited for in-depth analysis and development. Facilitation Ã¢â¬â It is a leadership role. They need to know how to use a range of creativity methods, tools, and techniques as well as manage group dynamics and move the group toward the desired outcome. The highly skilled facilitator will understand, plan, and manage the process to reach the desired outcome. A structured approach along with the proper tools and techniques can result in solving numerous issues that organizations face on a daily basis. It may take a little more time on the front end to identify the correct problem, but the ideas and solutions generated by the team will meet the needs and desires of your customers.
